working on the list

Through the summer I have been working on a life list - inspired by Chookooloonks and Gwen Bell's Personal Manifesto.

It has been an interesting experience.  I have not come up with 100.  The first 20 or so came easily.  Since then it has been a bit of a stretch.    Making Pear Butter is on the list.  I have never actually canned anything on my own.  I was around in the kitchen when my mum and grandmother brought out the canning jars and lids and rings.  I remember the sharp smell of pickling brine.  And bright coloured aprons and  mounds of little tiny cucumbers.  Anyways... making pear butter was on my list and I am happy to cross it off.

Here is my list so far in no particular order.

Knit a pair of socks:: Get up on a surf board and ride a wave:: Meet Keri Smith:: Write a novel:: Publish a book:: Visit San Francisco:: Make fudge::  Start my  own business::  Live in a vineyard:: Collect art:: Travel to Costa Rica::  Build a darkroom::  Host an Alice in Wonderland Crochet Party in the Backyard:: Tour the Napa Valley:: Take an Icebreaker to Antarctica::  Meet Gwen Bell::  Visit Iceland:: Eat Feta in Greece::  Ride in a helicopter::  Attend a writer's retreat with Jen Lee:: See a play in NYC::  Own a fancy pair of Fluevogs::  Make Pear Butter:: Walk through the Louvre:: Learn how to make a stained glass window:: Stay in the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec:: Sip coffee in Paris:: Stand at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem:: Snorkel in the ocean:: See my daughter choreograph and perform a dance to Johnny Cash:: Bake Challah:: Sew a quilt:: Storm watching in Ucluelet:: own a Jeep (preferably and old one):: attend the ballet in Russia::  Bake 100 types of Christmas cookies:: Visit Kodiak Island in Alaska:: Attend a fashion runway show:: Find a poloroid:: Pilates for a year:: Make homemade icecream:: Climb a wall in a climbing gym:: Whale watching up close:: Plank for 5 minutes::  Visit some other Hawaiian Island::

I was totally surprised to see " find a poloroid" on my list.  I had forgotten that I had wrote that down.  And guess what I found one yesterday.  A Poloroid Impulse for $3.99.  I just ordered some film.  I can hardly wait to try it out.  So, I can cross that off too.

My list is very fluid.  I am not even at 50 things... what would be on your list?  Have you ever thought of making one?

Congratulations! I love canning, as you know, I just started last year.

That looks yummy.

that is a really big list... I used to make lists... and since I am in job searching mode I am thinking more about what do I want and where do I want to be...

It is not easy.

My list would include visiting different monasteries, doing more with writing, doing librarian related things, and think more about what it means to have so much time and to be prepared for death. I think there is no better place to learn about this than the Orthodox church; and I think to be ready for this is to begin to really live...

Though I love lists, I've not contemplated this one.
I do love reading other people's.

I make these lists but they never feel quite right.

How do you know if you really want to do something? I want to do something, but do I really really want it? Is it all consuming?

Or do you just put more general wants?

I know there are no rules, but I NEED rules.

I go back and forth with these types of endeavors. I like looking forward to things, but I don't like making a list so massive I'll feel defeated in the end. I guess it's a fine balancing act. Currently I like an often updated short-term list. Your list looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy :)
