How are you going to celebrate your self this festive season?
This is a very strange question for me. Because this season is not about the self but the other. At least in my books. I will celebrate the season. We have started. Our tree is up. Decorated. I adore sitting in the quiet of the lights. We have an advent calendar we fill with chocolate every year. Two pieces in each drawer. One of each of my children. We give away gingerbread for St. Nicholas Day. One day in December I hang with my two siblings and we bake cookies for our friends. Some years we decorate gingerbread houses. Some years we don't. I always sew my children flannel pj's. And they always get to open them Christmas Eve along with an ornament I have chosen just for them. We pile into the car and stop for hot drinks and drive around to check out the Christmas lights. We always eat roast beast and yorkshire pudding on Christmas day. There is a lot of church. And cheese. We light candles and drink hot chocolate. We listen to carols and medieval chants and Johnny Cash. We watch movies - Love Actually and the LOTR trilogy are always on the list.
My children are in grade 12 this year. Quite possibly they will be home next Christmas or they may not... so this year seems strange to me... more poignant .... but, we have also been through a whole lot of crap these last few years and I don't want to put any expectations on the season. I will accept the days as they are given and be thankful we are together.

I'm enjoying this series of prompt questions. Your thoughtful responses less me to my own pondering. This one made me chuckle, though. The question is so completely at odds with the Orthodox view of the season. :)
