4th - scars and wounds

I was speaking with a friend about how we are the sum of all that we have experienced up to that moment.  All the battles we have fought and won and lost have forged us into the persons we are today.   I started to reflect on my own scars.  Physical marks of trauma.  I bear scars from a nasty attack of the chickenpox and dreadful acne when I was a teenager.  I have a scar on my left arm from when I burned myself with an iron.  I bear a scar from birthing my children and a scar from my numerous back surgeries.  There are more.  And then there are the scars on the heart.  Interior battles.  The human heart appears to be able to withstand an incredible amount of suffering and ache.  More than you could ever think possible.  The pain that has passed somehow gives us the strength to bear new wounds.  Hopefully with more grace and patience than before.

I needed to hear these words today, and I thank you for them. On days like today I think that the human heart cannot bear more wounds. May God's peace envelop you and your family.

And I was speaking with another friend about a week ago, generally about all of us having a past and wishing to forget it, and they said that they don't want to forget but to see these pains redeemed. I like that.

I love this. I've often thought about the scars that we accrue over the course of a life, visible and not. Our bodies are maps of our histories, after a while, aren't they? xo
