the best thing about my job.....

I love to hear people's stories. In my job, I get to ask questions. I genuinely love to hear the answers.

Blackbird
has a great clip from a fabulous site StoryCorps - go check them both out.

It dawned on me the other that the people I meet are all inspirations for characters. They can all be starting points. Two can be combined into one. I just have a difficult time making the time to get my rear end in the chair and do the writing. That is an understatement. I struggle with Resistance. I am the Queen of procrastination. There is always something else I could be doing and I usually do it. You know - the laundry, or banking. Or list making. I am a list maker extraordinaire.

I take inspiration from Eleanor who not only writes but sends it out and asks for feedback. I am humbled. And impressed. And motivated.

In other news -

My son's last guitar lesson was yesterday. I am saddened a little, but playing guitar is not my son's passion. He is still working on finding it. On the other hand, my daughter has found her passion: dance - and her recital is Tuesday and Wednesday and so life revolves around dress rehearsals and ballet ribbons and hairpins and tutus and all the drama that goes with being a type A dancer.

the first day of summer

O Happy Day.
Today summer begins. I heard that today is one the happiest days of the year. More people are happy today than any other day. The summer months stretch out before us. One can only hope that the summer weather will follow. Today looks promising for FUN DAY. Last day of guitar lessons for my son. NO DANCE REHEARSAL for my daughter.

I have been "covering the grey" myself these past few months - about 4 times a year I have it done "professtionally" - such a treat it was. I may wear a skirt today.

I am attempting to convince my company to find me a kneeling chair. I moved desks so I have to walk farther and further everyday to the printer. I have packed my sneakers and will walk on my lunch hour.

Making changes.

water slides and a fun day!

In my part of the world the end of the school year seems to dissolve into chaos.
Yesterday, a week and a half before the last day of school my children brought home all of their "stuff". They cleaned up the classroom.

They are in grade 7. Many of their friends are leaving the school to attend highschool in other areas so there is quite a bit of year end celebrating.

Today they are going to the water slides. Not this particular Water slide but another one. Tomorrow is a FUN DAY. I don't understand? Won't they have fun at the water slides? Then they have a "graduation ceremony" next Tuesday. What will they be doing Monday?

The last day of school is the 26th. What will they be doing in their classroom with no "stuff" for the remainder of next week?

Craziness.

ideas and waiting

Finally Monday we had a beautiful sunny, warm day - it was lovely. But,it is over.
We wait for the next high pressure system. Summer is due to begin on Friday.

I am feeling quite stretched this week. My daughter has dance recital practise every night. We have football practise two nights this week. We are committed to eating more vegetables with every meal which requires organization.

My back has decided to give me grief. The pain is like a bad memory. It takes my breath away. I absolutely refuse to allow it to take over. But, it is a battle. It is with me all day - all the time and it is present while I sleep. I had to miss pilates on Monday and use the ice pak. I have no real motivation to do anything at the moment.

One more week of lunches.

I am thankful for good friends. I am thankful for the little blogging community I take solace in.

in 10 years

My good friend simply victoria is finishing up her teaching unit. One of her last assignments was to have the children write to themselves from the point of view of being 10 years older. So the 22 year old writes to to the 12 year old. Where will you be and what will you be doing 10 years from now?

1. I will have had some piece of writing published
2. I be an accomplished knitter of socks
3. I will be managing my own mutual funds

Sheesh, this is harder than I thought.

*Mr. W's cotton hoodie

It is June 11th and we have the coldest June on record so far.

poppyseed cake and friendship

I made poppyseed cake with my new KitchenAid blender. It is a favourite family recipe - simple and basic - Hungarian influences. It has a cream cheese icing. It is quite good. We are stuffed.

We enjoyed a Friday evening soiree with good friends who are leaving for Ontario in a month. It was a bittersweet night. I am very glad for the opportunities that will avail our good friends but am saddened to think they will be across the country.

I finally made it to the libary and have some books to read. Both fiction and non fiction.

football season

I went down to the gas station
for no particular reason
Heard the screams from the high school
It's football season

friday night lights hiatus

We started to watch the 2nd Season. The disc was damaged. So, have seen the first two episodes. No other video rental place in my neighbourhood has a copy....what?

This has prompted us to restart our video rental with Videomatica in the big city. We are on a rotation and order DVD's and send them back as we view them and then we will cancel cable vision for the summer.

It is pouring rain and my son is practising football. It is June 3rd people. Where is the sun?

the russian trainer

This was my third week of pilates. My class instructor is a lovely russian woman whom I shall call L. L is petite and forceful. I am registered in a group class but I have been the only one who has signed up for this time period. So, it is like having a personal trainer for 1 hour.

One of the benefits of being the only one in the class is that I am receiving one on one technique adjustments. Which is very good. But, it also means that there are no opportunities to take small breaks as all eyes are on me! I am working very hard in my class and I am pooped out at the end of the hour. I love the feeling of being stretched. Once I am done with the beginner's class I will be able to take the next level and hopefully participate 2 x a week.

L is very direct. She wants to assist me. She is offering all kinds of advice. I need to do cardio as well as stretching. She thinks I should lose some weight. That would help with my overall back health. Do I agree? Yes, I agree. I could lose a few lbs. but, my focus has always been keeping my back flexible and living pain free.
We talked about taking on too much too soon. I know that if I start to schedule too much I will throw in the towel. I think it is a tremendous step that I have finally committed to taking the class. Not, that I didn't want to take the class but my life and work schedule did not allow the flexibility. Now, that I work a more consistent schedule I can fit in the pilates class.

But, for now it is good. I am very, very thankful for this opportunity and I will make the most of it.

perfecting the art of procrastination

I am in fine form.
I was the master of procrastination while at University. My sister and I would often compare our techniques. I can find all kinds of things to do besides what I should be doing. Why do laundry when you can bake?

I am baking cookies. Right now. First thing in the morning. Molasses Crinkles. I am not going to complain about the weather and the fact that it is raining again. I have church accounting to do. I am in need of detergent. I have 3 bags of clothes culled from our closets, two external hard drives, and wine/beer bottles to dispense with. We are having lasagna for dinner. I have started that too. I am feeling the need to sew something.

I am happy to report that I have a rather productive day after all. The clothing, bottles/ cans, computers have been recycled. The son has been fitted for contact lenses as playing football with glasses is not recommended. I also ordered a new pair of glasses for myself - mine are 5 years old and dated.

Lasagna is in the oven.

The laundry is still ongoing. The floors are next.

My 3rd Pilates class was great. I think I am hooked. I am now trying to figure out how I can get to 2 classes a week.
